NYC Loves Me- and YOU! Some quick tips
A city of millions runs more smoothly when we all know some basics
NYC can be an overwhelming wonder. Make your time in NYC more enjoyable for everyone with these few words of advice:
Stand on the right, move on the left. Be it an escalator, a sidewalk, or an aisle at the store or anywhere else, we move on the left and stand on the right. You’ll enjoy less feedback from New Yorkers if you stick to this basic rule.
Headphones. Nobody wants to hear your music, conversation, or podcast. If you’re listening to something, use your headphones. Or prepare for dirty looks at a minimum, discussions or yelling are also possible. Have some respect and use headphones.
Tipping: You’ll hear a LOT of feedback on this. In general, tipping is 20% for a sit down meal. More is great. Typically a buck for something that is made and handed to you, like coffee, is common. More is obviously welcomed. Leave $5 for your housekeeper (in an envelope or otherwise so they see it) for every cleaning (this used to be every day but in some hotels is not that often).
Reservations: It’s impossible to be sure when things will be busy. Reservations will save you many headaches and help you maximize your time.
Layers and a backpack: It can go from cold to warm from April to November. Wearing layers helps you to say comfortable and you can stow extra layers in your backpack. Be careful not to get pickpocketed with your backpack but it’s a great way to keep layers.
Multiple pairs of shoes- even tennis shoes. NYC is a walking town. You’ll be more comfortable if you bring an extra pair of walking shoes and switch off at least every day.
Get a phone leash. Put a lanyard leash on your phone to make stealing it harder and if you don’t have a password on your phone, tablet, and computer, set one up before you hit the streets.
Those lucky seven will get you started. Much more content coming soon! Thanks for reading our first post and if you have input- I’m looking forward to hearing it!
