Crime in NYC? Don't Get Bitten in the Big Apple!
Be aware and smart... like always!

Here are some practical safety tips for visiting New York City:
Getting Around the Big Apple
Keep to well-lit, busy streets, especially at night. Consider a taxi/Uber after 9 PM.
Stay aware of your surroundings and avoid being absorbed in your phone while walking- keep your phone in your pocket and don’t wear headphones.
When using the subway, stand back from the platform edge and try to wait near other people- and along the wall.
If a subway car is empty while others are full, there's usually a reason - choose a populated car. If someone becomes concerning, change cars at the next station.
Cross streets at crosswalks and always look both ways, even on one-way streets.
Protecting Belongings
Keep your wallet in your front pocket rather than your back pocket.
Wear backpacks and purses in front of you in crowded areas and consider small locks for zippers.
Don't flash expensive jewelry, watches, or electronics unnecessarily.
Keep bags zipped and close to your body, especially in crowded areas.
Have a plan for where to keep your important documents (passport, etc.) like a hotel safe.
Street Smarts
If someone asks for directions and/or something feels off, it's okay to keep walking.
Trust your instincts - if you get bad vibes, leave.
Avoid engaging with aggressive panhandlers or street performers.
Know your hotel's address and keep it saved in your phone and on a paper in your pocket.
Have a basic idea of where you're going before you start walking.
Money Safety
Only use ATMs inside banks or well-lit busy areas, and use them during the day instead of at night when possible.
Keep small bills handy for purchases so you don't have to pull out large amounts or just a credit card with a small limit.
Be careful with street vendors - stick to licensed ones with proper permits.
If using a credit card in a taxi or restaurant, keep an eye on your card when you can. Set alerts on your card to text you for all purchases.
Communication
Save important numbers in your phone (hotel, police, trusted local contacts) and carry a separate paper copy with you.
Keep your phone charged - consider bringing a portable charger just in case.
Know the basics of where you are - which avenue and street.
If you get lost, step into a store or restaurant to check your map rather than standing on the street. Most New Yorkers are happy to give directions.
Most importantly, remember that NYC is generally safe for tourists, especially in main areas. These tips are just common sense precautions that locals use every day in big cities all over the world- bring them to NYC! What did I miss?
